Centromeres
Centromeres are specialized regions of chromosomes that act as a binding site for spindle microtubules during cellular division and are a significant contributor to the successful genome segregation. They are essential for the faithful transmission of genetic material from one generation to the next, as their presence maintains the genetic integrity of the chromosomes. Centromeres also play an important role in stress-induced chromosome fragility and cell survival in response to environmental changes. In addition, they help to regulate gene expression and therefore contribute to the proper functioning of the cell. Applications of centromeres in research and medicine include cell diagnostics, gene expression regulation, breeding, and gene therapy.
