Osteopenia and Osteoporosis

Osteopenia and Osteoporosis are conditions characterized by low bone mineral density or strength, which can increase the risk of fractures. Osteopenia is generally considered a milder form of bone loss that occurs before Osteoporosis, and is often considered an early warning sign for the development of the latter. Osteoporosis results in bones that are fragile and more likely to break and is often found in post-menopausal women, or in those with low calcium intake. To prevent the development or worsening of Osteopenia or Osteoporosis, it is important to maintain a proper diet high in calcium, vitamin D, and other essential minerals, as well as to engage in weight-bearing exercise to help maintain bone density and strength. Treatments for Osteopenia and Osteoporosis include medications, lifestyle changes, calcium and vitamin D supplements, and physical therapy.
