Laminectomy

A laminectomy is a surgical procedure to remove part of the vertebral lamina, the thin bony layer of the vertebra, which covers and protects the spinal cord from damage. It is used to treat spinal stenosis, a condition caused by the narrowing of the spinal canal which compresses the spinal cord. It can also be used to access a spinal tumor or to relieve severe nerve root compression caused by a herniated disc or spinal fracture. The procedure can be done through either an open or minimally invasive approach depending on the severity of the condition. The benefits of the laminectomy include improved mobility, reduction in pain, and improvement in nerve function, allowing the patient to resume their normal activities.
