Blood Groups
Blood groups are a way to categorize blood based on its specific characteristics. Your blood type is determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens and antibodies in your blood. There are 8 major blood groups, which are determined by the presence of two antigens: A and B. This is further divided into two types: Rh positive and Rh negative. Additionally, there is a protein called ‘Rh factor’ present in your blood which can be either positive or negative. All of these characteristics are inherited from your parents and can be used to determine blood compatibility for safe blood transfusions. Knowing a person’s blood group also helps to prevent diseases caused by incompatible blood transfusions, such as hemolytic anemia. In addition, blood groups can also be used to detect different inherited disorders such as thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.
