Pharmacognosy

Pharmacognosy is the study of natural products and their pharmacological effects. It includes the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical, and biological properties of substances naturally found in plants, animals, and minerals. Pharmacognosy is a critical field of science that has enabled the development of many modern medicines and treatments, notably those derived from natural sources such as plants and fungi. The use of natural products for medicinal purposes is centuries old, and pharmacognosy has helped to track and identify the active components of natural medicines, and also to create synthetic versions of these products. This knowledge has aided in the development of pharmaceuticals that are cheaper, have fewer side-effects, and can be more targeted. In addition, the field provides a wealth of opportunities for researchers to explore alternative medicines, and study their clinical applications.
