Mariculture

Mariculture is the cultivation of marine organisms in the open sea or in enclosed areas such as tanks, ponds or cages. This practice has become increasingly important in recent years due to the increasing demand of seafood products. It is an economically important activity, enabling the production of fish, crustaceans, mollusks and other marine organisms, for human consumption and other industrial and pharmaceutical purposes. Mariculture also helps improve water quality and coastal habitats, and provides an additional source of income for coastal communities.
