Fisheries Sciences

Fisheries science is an interdisciplinary field involving the study of all aspects of the biology, ecology and management of fish and other aquatic animals and their habitats, from the genetic to the ecosystem level. It is a highly relevant field, as it provides knowledge on the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems, allows for effective management and conservation of aquatic resources, and contributes to the sustainable use of these resources for food and livelihoods. Fisheries science plays a key role in the socio-economic development of many nations, by providing data on the abundance, diversity and distribution of fish stocks, as well as understanding environmental factors and human impacts on these resources. Additionally, fisheries science is used to inform and improve fishing practices, increase the sustainability of fisheries, and help maintain the balance of a healthy, functioning environment.
