Cryobiology

Cryobiology is a branch of biology that studies the effects of extremely cold temperatures on living organisms. It deals with the study of survival and death of cells, tissues, and whole organisms when exposed to low temperatures. Cryobiology is used in many medical and scientific areas, such as cryopreservation of cells and tissues (in vitro fertilization, stem cell preservation and organ transplantation) and cryosurgery (the use of cold temperatures to kill cancer cells). This field of research also provides us with insights into the basic mechanisms of cell damage, differentiation, and aging that are related to prolonged exposure to low temperatures.
