Megacolon

Megacolon is a medical condition defined as an abnormally dilated, large colon. It is usually caused by chronic colonic obstruction, usually resulting from an underlying disorder, such as Hirschsprung's disease. The symptoms of megacolon include constipation, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, and difficulty with defecation. Treatment typically involves removing the obstruction, relieving constipation, and the use of medications to ease abdominal pain and cramping. In extreme cases surgery may be required. Megacolon can lead to significant complications, including infection, dehydration, and perforation of the colon. Early diagnosis and treatment can help avoid serious complications.
