Antimalarials

Antimalarials are drugs used to prevent or treat malaria, a potentially fatal disease caused by the bite of an infected mosquito. Antimalarials work by killing or inhibiting the growth of malaria parasites in the blood. While they cannot cure or prevent a severe or cerebral malaria infection, they are an effective way to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms, including fever, chills, joint pain, and anaemia. They also reduce the risk of death or serious complications from malaria. Antimalarials are an important tool in global public health initiatives to reduce the burden of malaria, especially in areas where access to diagnosis and treatment is limited. In addition, they may be used to help prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, and Zika virus.
