Microbiology

Microbiology is the branch of science that studies the structures, functions, and interactions of microscopic organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protists. Microbiology is an important field of study, as it sheds light on the diversity of microorganisms, their roles in biological processes, and their many roles in the environment, agriculture, and medicine. For example, microorganisms are used in biotechnology for producing food, fuel, and medicines; certain bacteria can be used to clean up polluted sites; and microorganisms play a role in the production of cheeses, yogurts, beer, and wines. In addition, microorganisms are essential for maintaining a healthy environment and play a key role in the decomposition of organic matter. Microbiology is also important for understanding infectious diseases and developing new treatments.
