Pneumoconiosis
Pneumoconiosis is a type of lung disease caused by inhaling hazardous particles, typically from occupational exposures. These exposures create chronic inflammations of the lungs and scar tissue formation, which can cause a range of respiratory symptoms, including difficulty breathing, chest pain, and coughing up blood. In severe cases, pneumoconiosis can lead to the development of progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), which can result in permanent disability or even death. In addition, individuals with pneumoconiosis are more likely to develop respiratory illnesses, such as cancer, COPD, and asthma. As such, early diagnosis and treatment of pneumoconiosis is critical to prevent further lung damage and potential morbidity. Pneumoconiosis is largely preventable with appropriate workplace safety measures, such as respiratory protection, hazard communication, and engineering controls.
