Natural Killer Cells
Natural killer (NK) cells are a type of white blood cell that play an important role in the immune system’s fight against infection. NK cells are able to recognize and attack foreign and abnormal cells that are infected or have become cancerous. They can also produce chemicals that stimulate other cells, like those of the immune system, to fight the infection. NK cells are an important part of the body’s defense against disease and are essential for maintaining a healthy immune system. They are used in medical research to understand the mechanisms of how cancer cells develop and spread, as well as in the development of immunotherapies and vaccines to help fight cancer and other diseases.
