Medication

Non-Adherence Medication non-adherence is the failure of a patient to follow instructions from a doctor or other healthcare professional with regards to taking medications as prescribed. It is one of the most common causes of poor health outcomes and is responsible for significant costs due to the high rate of hospitalizations associated with it. Non-adherence can take many forms, ranging from not filling a prescription to taking the wrong dose of medication at the wrong time. Strategies to improve medication adherence include patient-provider communication, medication reminder systems, and educating patients about their medications. Improvement in medication adherence can significantly reduce health costs as well as improve health outcomes.
