Gastrointestinal Immunology and Allergy

Gastrointestinal immunology and allergy is a branch of medicine that examines the ways in which the immune system interacts with digestive organs. It is a critically important field of study as the digestive system serves as the entry point for both beneficial and harmful substances. Thus, it is important to understand the complex network of organs, cells, and fluids that comprise the immune system within the gastrointestinal tract to provide successful diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of digestive disorders and diseases. With this knowledge medical professionals are able to determine the cause of the symptoms of allergies, food intolerances, irritable bowel syndrome, and other digestive issues related to the immune system. Ultimately, this field of study helps to improve the health and wellbeing of those affected by gastrointestinal immunology and allergy.
