Food Allergy
Food allergy is an adverse reaction to a food or food component which is caused by an individual’s immune system. Such reactions can be mild and include itching or swelling, as well as more serious, life threatening reactions such as anaphylaxis. Some of the most common allergens are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs and wheat. It is important that individuals who suffer from a food allergy take measures to avoid allergenic foods in order to prevent potentially serious reactions. People can also manage food allergies through the use of medications and by carrying an epinephrine auto-injector with them. Treatment of food allergies also includes taking steps to identify and avoid the foods that cause them.
