Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is an extreme allergic reaction that occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to a normally harmless substance in the environment, such as a bee sting. Symptoms usually start within minutes of contact with the allergen and can become severe or even life-threatening, causing heart or respiratory failure. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency, and treatment must be sought immediately. Anaphylaxis is especially important to recognize because it can be fatal and is becoming increasingly common. Prevention is the key to avoiding anaphylaxis, so it is important to recognize symptoms and risk factors, understand how to avoid allergens, and learn how to recognize and treat anaphylaxis if it does happen. The use of epinephrine auto-injectors is a common and very effective form of treatment for anaphylaxis.
