Allergy: Management
and Treatment Allergy is an immune system reaction to an allergen, which can be anything from pollen to food. Allergies can range from mild symptoms such as a runny nose to more severe reactions such as anaphylaxis, anaphylactic shock and even death. Knowing the triggers, avoiding them and developing an allergy management plan are essential for effective allergy treatment and prevention. Management of allergies includes a range of approaches such as desensitization, lifestyle modifications, pharmacological, and education. Desensitization involves introducing small and incremental amounts of the allergen to help the body build immunity. Lifestyle modifications involve avoiding allergen triggers and environmental modifications. Pharmacological treatments include immunotherapy and various medications to reduce or block the allergy’s symptoms. Education is the most important part of managing an allergy, since it allows individuals to understand their condition, how to identify triggers and how to best prevent or reduce reactions. Allergy management and treatment is important for improving quality of life of those affected by allergies, as well as reducing the risk of serious reactions like anaphylaxis.
