Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder which affects movement, and is caused by the degeneration of nerve cells that produce dopamine in the brain. Symptoms include tremor, slowness in movement, and stiffness. There is currently no cure for Parkinson's, but there are treatments such as medications and surgery available to help manage symptoms. The importance of Parkinson's disease is that it has a significant impact on the quality of life of those affected, and it can also be life-threatening due to the risk of complications such as falls and pneumonia. Research is ongoing to try and better understand the disease, including developing new treatments and finding a cure.
