Epilepsy in Children
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain periodically send abnormal signals that cause seizures. It is the most common neurological disorder in children, and can have a variety of causes. Common treatments include medication and lifestyle changes, although surgery and other therapies may also be recommended, depending on the underlying cause. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important for improving a child's long-term quality of life and reducing the risk of injury or death due to a seizure. To help diagnose epilepsy in children, doctors perform a physical exam and medical history, in addition to EEG tests and imaging studies. With effective treatment and management, many children with epilepsy can lead long and healthy lives.
