Obstetric Nursing

Obstetric nursing is a type of nursing that specializes in the care of women during pregnancy and the postpartum period. It is a specialty that puts emphasis on the physiological and psychological needs of women, their newborns, and their families. Obstetric nursing is a key component in providing quality care for women and their babies during one of the most important times in their lives. It is also critical in helping new mothers to adjust to the physical and psychological changes of motherhood, and to provide support, education, and advice throughout their pregnancies. Furthermore, obstetric nurses may be called upon to provide emergency care in obstetric emergencies, such as preterm labor, ectopic pregnancy, and labor and delivery complications. As a result, obstetric nurses require exceptional assessment skills, a broad base of knowledge, and the ability to think and act quickly in crisis situations.
