Nuclear Pharmacy

Nuclear pharmacy is a field of pharmacy practice that specializes in the preparation and distribution of radioactive materials for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. It is an important area of healthcare because it allows for the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases that are not visible on traditional imaging scans. Nuclear pharmacy enables doctors to identify and target tumors, metastatic cancer, and other diseases with radiation therapy. Additionally, nuclear pharmacy provides therapeutics, such as radioactive iodine to treat thyroid diseases and lymphoblastic leukemia, as well as radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine imaging and PET scans. Nuclear pharmacy is a specialized field of healthcare and requires a pharmacist to have a license and specialized training to practice it.
