Pulmonary Edema
Pulmonary edema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the lungs that can cause difficulty breathing. It is caused by an imbalance of pressure between the capillaries and the airways, or by excessive pressure within the pulmonary vessels. It can be a result of heart failure, shock, or certain chronic pulmonary diseases. Symptoms include shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, and coughing up pink, frothy sputum. Treatment typically involves medications to reduce fluid in the lungs or to improve heart function, and breathing support. Pulmonary edema is a serious medical condition that can lead to life-threatening complications. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to ensure a positive outcome.
