Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that is characterized by weakness and fatigue of the skeletal muscles. It is caused by a breakdown in communication between our nerves and muscles, due to antibodies that block, alter, or destroy the receptors for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. It is most commonly seen in adults, but it can also affect children. Symptoms can range from mild weakness to life-threatening paralysis. Treatment includes medications, lifestyle changes, and in some cases, surgery. Myasthenia gravis is an important condition that affects many people and can have serious consequences if left untreated. With the right combination of treatments, those affected can lead a normal life.
