Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating neurological disease, which affects the central nervous system (CNS). It is the most common neurological disorder in young adults, and is caused by damage to the myelin sheath (a protective coating around nerve cells) in the CNS, resulting in impaired communication between nerve cells. Symptoms vary but can include muscle weakness, difficulty with mobility, fatigue, blindness and cognitive impairment. Treatment options may include medications that reduce inflammation, physical, occupational and speech therapy, and management of symptoms. Although there is currently no cure for MS, recent research suggests that early diagnosis and treatment of symptoms may help slow the progression of the disease and improve quality of life for those affected.
