Dermatomyositis

Dermatomyositis is a rare autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells and tissue, causing inflammation of the muscles and the skin. The disease can cause muscle weakness and a distinctive rash on the eyelids, knuckles, elbows, chest and back. Dermatomyositis has no known cause and it is usually diagnosed through a combination of medical tests. Treatment involves corticosteroids and other immunosuppressants to reduce inflammation, medications to prevent flare-ups, physical and occupational therapy and sunscreen protection. Good prognosis depends on the timely diagnosis and early initiation of treatment.

Immunity means being protected from something and being unaffected or not bothered by it. There are two main types of immunity: innate, also called natural or inherited, and adaptive. Our immune system protects us and helps fight off disease. Microorganisms, small microscopic organisms, and viruses are everywhere.
