Bacteria
Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms that are essential to all life on Earth. Bacteria can be found in virtually every environment, from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains. Bacteria play a key role in the health and functioning of many ecosystems, providing valuable services like nutrient cycling, decomposition, and even nitrogen fixation. They can also cause illnesses, such as salmonella and cholera, which has made them notorious in the public. However, many types of bacteria are beneficial, providing us with many important products, such as antibiotics, probiotics, and vitamins. Through the use of genetic engineering, scientists are also able to use bacteria to produce proteins and enzymes for therapeutic and industrial use.
