Intestinal Transplantation
Intestinal transplantation is an emerging treatment for people with irreversible intestinal failure, in which all or part of the small or large intestine, or both, are replaced. This procedure is performed in cases when diseases such as short bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, or other causes have destroyed the function of the intestines. Intestinal transplantation holds the promise of restoring normal function to the intestines, allowing patients to regain their quality of life and the ability to absorb nutrients and to become fully independent. It is an increasingly important treatment option for people with intestinal failure and has significantly improved patient outcomes in recent years.
