Intestinal Stoma
An intestinal stoma is an artificial opening through the abdominal wall, allowing waste to pass outside the body. It may be used to bypass an area of the intestine, allowing the person to function without going through traditional digestion, or in cases of rectal or colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease. The stoma can be permanent or temporary and is typically monitored by a trained medical technician. By allowing the body to release waste without needing to pass it through the intestines, stomas can prevent infection, reduce pain, and increase quality of life. They are also beneficial for people with chronic digestive issues that disrupt the flow of fecal matter.
