Intestinal Resection
An intestinal resection is a surgical procedure in which a section of the intestine is removed. This is usually done to treat diseases of the intestine such as cancer, Crohn's disease, or volvulus and can also be done to treat trauma or injury to the bowel. The procedure is important for providing relief from abdominal pain and/or restoring normal digestive functions. After the resection, the ends of the intestine are reconnected so that digestion and other functions of the intestine can continue. Patients may need to follow a special diet and take nutritional supplements following the procedure to ensure they get the proper nutrition.
