Ciona Intestinalis
Ciona Intestinalis, also known as the "sea squirt", is a species of marine animal found anywhere from the coasts of Europe to the Mediterranean and Atlantic Oceans. It is a filter-feeder and feeds on algae, plankton and other small organisms in the water. It is an important part of aquatic ecosystems, filtering out pollutants and providing nutrition to other organisms in the ecosystem, including commercially important fish species. Ciona Intestinalis also serves as a research organism in the field of developmental biology and genetics and is often used in studies looking at organogenesis, evolution, gene function, and cell signaling. Its small size and simple anatomy make it an ideal organism for studying biological processes.
