P-Glycoproteins

P-Glycoproteins (P-GPs) are membrane transporters that play an important role in the biological fate of a wide range of compounds. Found on the cell surface, P-GPs are involved in the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs, as well as hormones, toxins, nutrients and other molecules. These transporters are essential for the homeostasis of the cell and are also involved in the development of multidrug resistance in cancers. Therefore, inhibition or modulation of P-GPs is an important strategy to improve the pharmacological efficacy of drugs, allowing them to reach the target sites at an optimal dose.

Glycomics is particularly important in microbiology because glycans play diverse roles in bacterial physiology. Metabolomics combines strategies to identify and quantify cellular metabolites using sophisticated analytical technologies with the application of statistical and multi-variant methods for information extraction and data interpretation.
