Lipidomics

Lipidomics is a branch of metabolomics that focuses on identifying, characterizing and quantifying the various lipids in a biological sample. Lipids are fatty compounds, some of which serve as an energy source, as well as being involved in cell signaling, membrane formation and other essential biological processes. Lipidomics has a wide range of applications, particularly in biomedical research, where it is used to provide insights into diseases such as cancer and neurological disorders. By measuring the levels of specific lipids in a sample, researchers can pinpoint changes in the lipid profile that might indicate a particular disease, or a response to a drug or therapeutic intervention. Such research is necessary for developing better diagnostic tools, treatments and preventive measures for many diseases.
