Glycobiology

Glycobiology is an interdisciplinary science that studies the structure, biosynthesis and reactivity of carbohydrates, commonly known as sugars, and their roles in biological processes. Glycobiology is important for understanding some diseases, as carbohydrates and their receptors are found on the surface of cells, playing a role in cell-signaling, immune responses and other essential biological functions. Glycobiology has been used to develop drugs, vaccines and treatments for various diseases and disorders, such as cancer, diabetes and bacterial infections. Additionally, glycobiology is used in the development of biomaterials, such as tissue engineering and the design of synthetic biological systems.
