Diabetes
Diabetes is a common, chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar. It occurs when the body either doesn't produce enough insulin (a hormone that helps glucose move into cells) or when cells don't respond to the insulin that is produced. This leads to high levels of glucose in the blood, which can cause numerous health complications and even death. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, and non-traumatic amputations of feet and legs. Treatments for diabetes include lifestyle changes (such as diet and exercise) and medications. Proper management of diabetes can help reduce the risk of these and other potentially life-threatening complications.
