Chondrocytes

Chondrocytes are specialised cells that form and maintain cartilage, a strong and flexible connective tissue found in the nose, ears, and joints throughout the body. They are responsible for the production of collagen, a major component of cartilage, and other molecules that provide structural stability and facilitate movement of the joints. Chondrocytes are essential for healthy cartilage and joint functioning and the degeneration of these cells is associated with osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. Therefore, the regulation of these cells holds promise for the development of new treatments for osteoarthritis.

Glycomics is particularly important in microbiology because glycans play diverse roles in bacterial physiology. Metabolomics combines strategies to identify and quantify cellular metabolites using sophisticated analytical technologies with the application of statistical and multi-variant methods for information extraction and data interpretation.
