Atheromas

Atheromas are benign growths, also referred to as fatty plaques, which are commonly found in the walls of arteries. The formation of these atheromas is believed to be a result of chronic inflammation in the arterial walls, caused by factors such as smoking, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Atheromas are considered to be a major risk factor for heart diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and stroke. Treatment is aimed at minimizing the chances of these atheromas rupturing, which can lead to the formation of blood clots, which may be fatal. Treatment typically involves lifestyle modifications, such as reducing bad cholesterol levels and controlling high blood pressure. In extreme cases, surgery may be required to remove the atheromas. Atheromas are also associated with other diseases such as kidney disease, dementia, and melanoma.

Glycomics is particularly important in microbiology because glycans play diverse roles in bacterial physiology. Metabolomics combines strategies to identify and quantify cellular metabolites using sophisticated analytical technologies with the application of statistical and multi-variant methods for information extraction and data interpretation.
