Y-Linked Traits

Y-linked traits are qualities which are determined by genes located on the Y chromosome, the male-determining chromosome. These traits are passed from father to son and are thus inherited only by males in a family, with no contribution from the mother. Y-linked traits are significant because they explain aspects of male biology and behaviour which are not present in females. An example of a Y-linked trait is the ability to father children, which results from the presence of sperm-producing cells. Another example is androgen-dependent traits, such as male-pattern baldness, which is determined by the production of androgens. Y-linked traits are studied by scientists to understand the underlying biological mechanisms and may be useful for certain medical applications, such as personalized treatment of male-related diseases.
