Gene Pool
A gene pool is the set of genetic information, or genes, present in any given species. It is the combined genetic information from all the individuals of the species, and its distribution among them, which helps determine the characteristics of that species. It is an important factor in evolutionary biology, as the genes present in a gene pool can affect the susceptibility of the species to environmental pressures that lead to evolutionary change. Additionally, it affects the population's chances for survival and health. Human gene pools are studied to understand the genetic risk factors for diseases, as well as for ancestry tracing and other genetic research. Understanding gene pools can also help conservation efforts, by allowing us to identify which species may be more likely to become extinct.
