Gene Ontologies
Gene Ontologies are a structured set of gene-based functional terms used to annotate and describe gene products. The term comes from the field of genomics, and is used to describe how a gene or gene product relates to other parts of the cell and how it is involved in certain biological processes. Gene Ontologies are useful in understanding the biological roles of genes and gene products, as well as in enhancing the detection of gene interactions. They are also invaluable in carrying out large-scale studies of gene functions. Furthermore, Gene Ontologies can be used to better understand changes in gene expression in different conditions or diseases.
