Cleft Lip and Palate
Cleft lip and palate is a birth defect whereby there is an opening in the lip and/or roof of the mouth (palate). It is a common birth defect and can cause both physical and psychological impacts on an affected person’s life. Treatment can involve multiple surgeries and other interventions to address the clefts, depending on the severity of the condition. Additionally, speech therapy, orthodontic care, hearing loss evaluations, and psychological counseling are often needed for those with cleft lip and palate. It is important for parents and family members to seek out support and resources for people living with a cleft lip and palate to ensure that the individual receives the care and support they need. Treatment and support can help improve quality of life for those affected.
