Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is a medical procedure involving the insertion of a needle through the abdomen of a pregnant woman into the amniotic sac in order to take a sample of amniotic fluid. The fluid is then tested for birth defects, genetic disorders, and infections. The procedure is considered safe, with only a small risk of miscarriage. It is mainly used for pregnant women over 35 years of age who are considered high risk for genetic and chromosomal abnormalities, but can also be used for other reasons such as gender selection. Amniocentesis is an important tool for prenatal diagnosis and can help inform decisions about the pregnancy by providing important information about the fetus.
