Ustilago Maydis
Ustilago maydis is a plant pathogen of worldwide importance. It is a common fungal disease of maize, commonly known as corn smut, which can cause large yield losses in crops. Ustilago maydis is known for its ability to undergo a dimorphic lifestyle, with both filamentous and yeast-like forms. It is also of significant importance to the scientific community, due to its importance as a model organism for understanding the genetic, biochemical and physiological mechanisms of dimorphism and pathogenicity. As a consequence, understanding Ustilago maydis has potential applications in fields such as biotechnology and food safety.
