Pneumocytes
Pneumocytes are cells in the alveoli of the lungs which have an important role in gas exchange. They are responsible for taking oxygen from the air and transferring it into the bloodstream and vice versa. They also provide protection against foreign invaders such as bacteria by secreting mucus and surfactant, a substance that helps keep the alveoli open and prevents them from collapsing. Pneumocytes are essential for normal breathing and thus, having healthy lungs and overall health.
