Mucoromycota
Mucoromycota is a group of mostly saprobic fungi, which play an important and diverse role in the environment by breaking down dead organic matter and recycling it back into the soil and atmosphere. These fungi are usually abundant in soil, and are known for their ability to grow rapidly under moist, but not wet, conditions. They are also known to cause food spoilage in produce and breads, as well as contamination of indoor air. Mucoromycota can also be used in the breakdown of pollution, in bioremediation and biotransformation, and in fermentation processes. As such, they are essential components of the global ecosystem, playing a crucial role in the cycling of carbon and nitrogen.
