Blastomycosis
Blastomycosis is a fungal infection caused by the fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis. It is found normally in the soils of certain regions, primarily in the Midwest and southeastern United States. Symptoms include fever, chest pain, coughing, and skin lesions. When left untreated, the infection may spread to the lungs, bones, and other organs, leading to more severe medical issues. Inhalation of fungal spores is the most common form of transmission. Treatments typically include antifungal drugs such as itraconazole or fluconazole. While rare, if detected early, the disease is usually treatable. Proper diagnosis requires laboratory testing and is essential for successful treatment of blastomycosis.
