Listeria
Monocytogenes Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium that can cause a variety of illnesses in humans such as fever, muscle aches, and vomiting. Its ability to traverse the blood–brain barrier and its resistance to cold temperature makes it a particularly dangerous organism. Listeria monocytogenes is commonly found in soil, water, and animal and human feces, and can contaminate food through contact with these sources. If a person consumes food that is contaminated with Listeria, he or she could become seriously ill. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment is essential for reducing the severity of the disease and preventing complications. Furthermore, it can cause miscarriages in pregnant women and can even be life-threatening. Therefore, it is essential to implement food safety practices and put in place strict policies to reduce the risks of listeriosis in food.
