Food and Drug Interactions
Food and drug interactions refer to the biological effects that occur when a person consumes a food or beverage while taking a medication. These interactions can influence both the safety and efficacy of the drugs and can be beneficial or adverse. Generally, the type and degree of interaction will depend on the type and dose of the drug, the type and amount of food or beverage consumed, the amount of time between ingesting the two, and the individual’s age, weight, health status, and other factors. In order to maximize the effectiveness of medications and minimize the potential for dangerous effects, it is important to be aware of potential food and drug interactions. In some cases, health professionals may be able to provide advice on how to best take medications to reduce the risk of interactions.
