Folic Acid
Folic acid is a water-soluble B-vitamin that is essential for healthy cell and tissue development. It plays an important role in DNA synthesis and repair, cell division and the production of red blood cells. The body needs folic acid in order to produce the amino acid methionine, which is essential for the manufacture of proteins and other essential molecules. Folic acid plays a crucial role in the prevention of birth defects, such as neural tube defects, by supporting healthy embryonic development. It is found in foods such as fortified cereals, leafy green vegetables, beans, citrus fruits and liver. Folic acid supplements are important for pregnant women as well as those who are at risk for deficiency, including alcoholics, elderly people and those suffering from undernourishment. In addition, folic acid can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, and may also help to protect against some cancers.
