Fabaceae
Fabaceae, or the legume family, is one of the largest and most important families of flowering plants. The family includes trees, shrubs, herbs and vines that produce beans, peas, and other edible seeds for human and animal consumption. Fabaceae are also known for their ability to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, a process known as nitrogen fixation, which increases soil fertility and improves crop yields. Additionally, their deep-rooted behaviour helps prevent soil erosion and provides habitats for other species. Fabaceae are essential for food security and for sustaining healthy ecosystems around the world.
